By Juan

He said to the crowd: “When you see a cloud rising in the west, immediately you say, ‘It’s going to rain,’ and it does. And when the south wind blows, you say, ‘It’s going to be hot,’ and it is. Hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky. How is it that you don’t know how to interpret this present time? “Why don’t you judge for yourselves what is right? As you are going with your adversary to the magistrate, try hard to be reconciled to him on the way, or he may drag you off to the judge, and the judge turn you over to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison. I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.” —Luke 12:54-59, NIV

I would love to hear some opinions on this scripture.

Is there a relation between these two stories, the one of interpreting one's environment in comparison to the one of going to court with your adversary, or do they stand alone?

Is there a deeper level that Jesus wanted us to interpret?

Or, is it simply saying, literally, settle a dispute before it ends up in an expensive legal battle, with possible disastrous consequences?

Or, maybe both?

After perusing a commentary and thinking a bit myself here is something of a response.

Jesus is saying that although Israel was good at understanding the weather they were doing a poor job seeing the spiritual signs around them. They were blind and unable to see the obvious; God was truly amongst them. I agree with the commentator, Matthew Henry, who says that there is a spiritual application to Jesus advice that it is wise to be reconciled to our adversary. We are meant to understand that Jesus is God and to be reconciled to Him before the coming judgement of God.

And as you continue to read Luke, the closer Jesus gets to Jerusalem and his death the louder the cry becomes that we should not miss the signs and find salvation from a future judgement.

I can tell you through personal experience. I once rear ended a another car coming off the highway in California. Although it sas more of a bump of bumpers at about 5 miles an hour, the man in the other car sued me for 115,000 dollars. He claimed that as a result of the accident he required knee surgery and had a bad back and and othr stuff I don't remember at the moment. But to top it off his wife was aldo suing me because her husband could no longer have sex with her due to the injuries suffered in the car bump. Numerous times I apologised to the man and asked for his foregiveness. One of the first things my lawyer found out about this man was he was a "gold digger" a person who looks for a reason to take asvantage of others financially. Was the accident my fault? Yes it was. Was the other man tring to take advantage of me? Yes he was. I put it all into God's hands and often prayed that everything would come out well.
I think God wants us all to forgive each other our offenses as well as to ask forgiveness from others. If, with God's help, we are strong and humble enough to do that we glory God. We show his love.
After a very frustrating year of trying to sue me this man had to cancel his law suit against me because nothing was going his way. Coincidence? I don't think so. God looks on the heart and knows when we're sincere. God took care of me and my family, also included in the suit. Praise God!
