The One!

By Richard

In Matthew we read that John the Baptist (who was in prison at the time) sent some of his disciples to Jesus to ask him if he was,
“the One that [they had] been expecting?”

Jesus tells the disciples to go and tell John what has been going on:

The blind see,
The lame walk,
Lepers are cleansed,
The deaf hear,
The dead are raised,
The wretched of the earth learn that God is on their side.

(Matthew 11: 4-6, the Message)

I commonly hear people proposing rational explanations for Jesus’ miracles.

“He was good at using herbal medicine!”

“Lake Galilee froze and so it looked like he was walking on water!”

“The feeding of the 5000 was just a massive sharing campaign that Jesus managed to get going!”

“He never really died on the cross!”

Etc. etc. etc.

But if we take this track we may miss the point. Supernatural things are happing because Jesus is the supernatural One. Jesus is not just another nice man with a good message. He is God and his is the message. In other words if we do not allow the supernatural then what we’re saying is that there is no God, and then all we become is a well organised collection of bio-chemicals. But, if there was a supernatural God, then I think we’d expect him to act supernaturally when he visited the earth.

The supernatural elements do not make the message unbelievable…rather they make the message believable.

Will you believe that Jesus is the One, and find life as you follow him?
