The Proof of the Pudding

By Richard

I like the Message’s slant on Matthew 11: 6-19. Jesus talks about how the people of Israel were like spoilt children. So busy whining they were missing the arrival of the Messiah. So busy forming opinions about John the Baptist being “crazy” (because he fasted) and Jesus being “lush, a friend of the riff-raff” (because he feasted and hung out with sinners) they were missing the most important event in history. Their whining and opinion making were simply self-centred excuses that distanced them from God. Jesus reminds the crowd (us),

“Opinion polls don’t count for much, do they? The proof of the pudding is in the eating.” (Matthew 11: 19 the Message)

The passage calls us to stop making excuses before we’ve given Jesus a chance. Let us taste and see that the Messiah has come and that he (and his message) is good. And once you’ve given Christ a good taste, come and let me know if you’re still not satisfied!
